Couple more stray observations

-Everyone I talk to feels misunderstood. Everyone. Sometimes that’s justifiable and sometimes it isn’t but it’s true across a lot of different divides. I feel misunderstood, too, but that’s less important to me than it was.

-I’ve lost a lot of optimism but perhaps that’s a good thing. It’s not the same as despair. I like that people who aren’t normally political are trying to figure out what it means to be engaged. I like that we don’t want harm to come to the country or the world or each other. I like that we don’t want to be thought of as racists or sexists even when we absolutely are racist or sexist.

-Wikipedia has an okay translation of The Grand Inquisitor, a chapter from The Brothers Karamazov in which one character tells another a story about Jesus being put on trial for all the evil in the world. It’s here: https://en.m.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Brothers_Karamazov/Book_V/Chapter_5

-Here’s the author of Ecclesiastes: “He hath made everything beautiful in its time. Also He hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.”
