I’m getting the idea that you’ve heard most scifi-y speculations before, but one of the most useful and humbling things I ever heard was someone’s comment, at the height of the “alien invasion” interest, that aliens might not wreck our world — they might be very innocent and good. Extraterrestrial contact might be devastating for *them*.
Yeah, I’ve definitely heard that. I was thinking also about Stephen Hawking’s latest theory, too, where he says we should probably stop attempting to look for intelligent life in the universe because if it’s advanced enough to contact us it’s not totally unlikely that it will treat us the way Andrew Jackson treated the Native population.
